about Shackell's lake

Located near Lower Hamswell, between Bath and Bristol, Shackell’s Lake was stocked by the Amalgamation in the 1980s. It was dug in 1983 by Lesley Shackell and his sons, Richard and Robert, and is fed by the Lam Brook.

The lake has been leased to Amalgamated Fisheries Limited since 1989.

Fishing at Shackell's

Shackell’s holds carp up to 20lb, along with a good head of bream, roach, perch, rudd, tench, and a healthy number of gudgeon. The carp stock is mixed, including commons, zip linears, fully scaled, mirrors, plus a few koi and ghost carp.

Just downstream in the Lam Brook, there’s also a population of native white-clawed crayfish. To help protect them, please make sure all nets and equipment are completely dry before use, as signal crayfish can spread through damp gear.

Access and restrictions

The lake can be fished on a day ticket or by permit holders (no additional ticket needed). However, please observe the following times:

  • 16 June – 30 September: 07:00 – 21:00

  • 1 October – 30 April: 08:00 – Dusk

No night fishing is allowed.

There is also a close season from 1 May to 15 June (inclusive).

Directions

From the A420: At the top of Tog Hill, turn onto Freezinghill Lane. This will be right if you’re coming from Wick, or left if you’re coming from the A46 roundabout. After about 2 miles, the turning to Lower Hamswell is on the left.

From Bath via Lansdown: Turn right into Freezinghill Lane; the lane to Lower Hamswell is around 300 yards on the right.

Once on the lane, continue through the hamlet of Lower Hamswell and cross two cattle grids. The car park entrance is on the left just after the second cattle grid.

The lake is reached by crossing two fields. Entry is through a gateway (wide enough for a barrow) next to a cottage, just before the second cattle grid. Please keep noise to a minimum when arriving and leaving.

The fields can be waterlogged during the winter, so please take care when crossing. In summer, livestock may be present in both fields. Please respect their space and ensure all gates (including the entrance gate and the gate to the lake) are properly closed behind you.

The lake is located on the right, about halfway across the second field. The photos below shows the view looking back across both fields from the lake entrance.
