Tockenham reservoir
Amalgamated fisheries' largest venue
about tockenham reservoir
Tockenham Reservoir, near Lyneham, lies just three miles from M4 intersection 16 via the A3102. This beautiful 12.5 acre lake, surrounded by oak woodland, was created in 1810 to provide water for the Wilts and Berks Canal.
It was purchased by us in 1980 when we were Bristol, Bath and Wiltshire Amalgamated Anglers. Previously the famous Donald Leney (in the 1940s and 1950s) owned the lake, but we have no sign it was stocked with Leney carp.
Fishing at tockenham
Tockenham has been developed into a magnificent fishery stocked with Common and Mirror carp to 30lb, Tench, Bream, Roach, Perch and Rudd. Most fishing is from platforms, including three purpose built for easy access (two recently in 2022), and there are good parking facilities.
Amalgamated fisheries limited obtained a grant for £25,000 in 2021 for dam spillway works, and has recently (2024) surrounded the lake with an Otter fence involving the expenditure of £65,000. In 2022 the lake was stocked with 20 mirror carp of 11-15lb (at least one has reached 20lb), 400 Tench and 300 Bream, and further stocking of especially carp is forthcoming with the biosecurity of the fishery secure.
wildlife at tockenham
Tockenham is the largest of our venues, and those that love wildlife will find peace and tranquility.
Birdlife is varied and has included Kingfishers, Redstarts, Tree creepers, Spotted flycatchers, Reed bunting and Marsh tits along with more common species. Ospreys on their spring and autumn migrations often visit the lake for a quick snack – a truly magnificent sight. With the recent introduction of 48 hour fishing (with relevant night permit), there is no better way to spend the weekend.

Directions
Sat Nav Postcode: SN15 4DS Bowd’s lane, Lyneham. Wilts.
If approaching from the direction of Wootton Bassett on the A3102, Bowd’s lane is on the right approximately 0.5 miles before Lyneham (a farm shop is opposite).
If approaching from Calne or Sutton Benger, take the A3102 towards Wootton Bassett at the roundabout in Lyneham village, and Bowd’s lane is approx 0.5 miles on the left. The lake entrance is in the right, 400 yards down Bowd’s lane.
The lake is protected by a padlocked gate, the entry code is provided on your permit. Please close and scramble the lock on entry and exit.
As we have invested heavily in an otter fence, lake access will involve passing through a second gate in this fence. Please ensure that this is closed with no exceptions.
other information
- Note : No day tickets, permit holders only
- Clearance at gate for high vehicles (6’6”)
- Please be fully aware of Amalgamated Anglers fisheries rules before fishing. Bailiffs conduct occasional rig checks so please ensure barbless hooks and your rigs are safe. When fishing for carp a large unhooking mat is mandatory. A sling is the safest way of returning your catch to the water.
- Take all rubbish home with you. Permits have in the past been revoked because of littering.
- All juniors must be accompanied by an adult. Under 16s may fish for free provided they occupy the same swim as their guardian, and must only fish with one rod each.
- Night fishing is allowed, on application for a night permit (an amalgamated anglers permit is required to apply). Application forms are available from Pat Leonard.
- From 1st June 2025 the permitted period to stay at the lake has been extended to 48 hours.
